In my attempts to write more about the dead, ancestors and the arte of necromancy, I keep hitting a very significant wall: I want to say so much. I intend to still write some more ancestor posts, but I also want to redirect my focus to writing a much larger document on consorting with the dead. I have no idea when this will be completed, I know only that it will be made. In the meantime, I wanted to provide this ritual, as a friend specifically requested it, and it will provide something in the meantime! Enjoy this simple ritual to call forward a spirit of the dead.
The Basic Rite
This is a rite designed to call forward a non-ancestral dead person to commune with, learn from, and safely form a relationship with. This is also for non-adversarial dead, so not murderers, criminals or tyrants. This is a general call to the dead. I highly recommend writing your own with your own spirits. I will give an example with Hekate and a specific named dead, to see the differences. You will need the following:
Glass of Cool Water
Two White Candles
Bowl of Honey
Fresh Fruits
Bread
White Flowers
Some protective charm
The following are optional additions:
Photo of Person (ideally this should always be present)
Grave earth (paid for properly, again another ideal)
Votive or 7 glass with photo of person loaded with grave earth
Myrrh incense or other dead-calling incense
Scrying mirror
Other divinatory tools (whatever you are most familiar with)
This can be performed at any time, but the night of a waxing or full moon, on a Monday or Wednesday, or another day aligned with the qualities of the person are best. Set up the glass of water, flanked by the two candles and surrounded in a circle of white flowers onto a white cloth. This should ideally be on a table, or this can even be done at the person’s grave. A tree may also be a suitable place to do this at. Set the bowl of honey to the right, the fruits to the left, and the bread before you. If you have a votive candle, set that behind the glass. Set your mirror nearby, and have your tools at the ready. If you have just a photo or grave dirt, place them behind the glass, propped up somehow. Perform any opening rites you normally would, and then light the candles and incense if present.
I call to you NN (child of Name of Mother/Son of Adam/Daughter of Eve/Child of Adam and Eve), by the line of ancestors before and behind me, by the spirits that surround all of us, by my saints and angels, and by your saints and angels. I call you, over river, over sea, over hill, over byway, by land, by air, by water, whatever way you must come, come to me. See! I give you water if you are thirsty. See! I give you bread if you are hungry. See! I give you fruit if you need refreshing. See! I give you honey if you are bitter. Come, O, NN, come! These candles light your way, these candles guide you to me, these candles give you warmth, so come to me here and now, in this day and hour, quickly, quickly, immediately, immediately, now, now!
Wait a moment and check with divination if they are present (a yes/no coin flip is nice for this), or if you detect their presence begin your dialogue. This can be done to any end, for any means. I like this for first contact with a spirit, to get to know them, and to begin developing a relationship with them. Discuss why you have called them openly, and what you seek from a relationship with them. Tell them what you intend to offer, and for how long. If terms are agreed to, record these so you do not forget them later. At some other point, I will discuss these matters more in-depth and with greater detail. Trust in your spirits, and your divination, that you are doing the right thing, and act accordingly.
A Variation With Hekate
All the previous materials remain the same. Bring additional materials as you see fit. Light the two candles, saying:
DADOPHOROS DADOPHOROS DADOPHOROS
I light these candles in the name of Hekate-Dadophoros
The Torch Bearer
That she may guide the spirit I seek to call
To me, to me, to me
Breathe thrice onto the water, and call out thrice:
Zoila Emperatriz Chávarri Castillo, known as Yma Sumac, daughter of Emilia Castillo, I call you! By Hekate the Queen, I call you to me, to me, to me!
Raise up each dish as you say:
Behold, I am giving you water! Behold, I am giving you honey! Behold, I am giving you fruit! Behold, I am giving you bread! Behold, I am calling you from the land of the dead!
From the Andean mountains of your childhood, to Los Angeles, the city of angels, your voice resounds! In Europe, in Africa, and throughout South America your voice was known. I call you, singer with the voice of Xtabay! Draw near to me, to me, to me!
By DADOPHOROS DADOPHORS be guided to me, by KLEIDEPHOROS KLEIDEPHOROS let your way be open to me, PROPYLAIA PROPYLAIA open the portal! ENODIA ENODIA bring Yma Sumac to me, to me, to me!
Wait, respond, and record as needed.
